Christmas Culture Around the World

Merry Christmas! What was the food?

Christmas is a special time when families come together to share love, food, and traditions. In many parts of the world, people gather at home to enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner, spend time with relatives, exchange gifts, and reflect on the year. Food plays a central role in the celebration, symbolizing togetherness and gratitude. While the spirit of Christmas is similar everywhere—family, kindness, and joy—the way it is celebrated can differ greatly from one home or country to another.

Not every family or country celebrates Christmas in the same way. In some places, Christmas meals are formal and carefully planned, while in others they are simple but joyful. For example, families might cook roasted meat, vegetables, and desserts in one country, while in another they may prepare traditional local dishes shared in a relaxed, communal setting. What people cook often depends on culture, climate, and local ingredients—but the meaning behind the meal remains the same: sharing and unity.

A Comparison: Christmas 2024 in the UK and Christmas 2025 in Angola

Below is a reflection on how our founder, Sofonie Dala, experienced Christmas in two different countries.

In 2024 in the UK, Sofonie Dala celebrated Christmas with her neighbours, as she was studying at the time and away from close family. The celebration was warm and welcoming. Later, she went outside to enjoy the festive atmosphere—the city walls of York were beautifully decorated, and the Christmas lights made the city look magical. The streets were well organised, lively, and full of seasonal charm.

In 2025 in Angola, Christmas was very different but equally meaningful. This time, Sofonie celebrated with her family, in a calm and peaceful environment. There were no outside noises or busy streets, and the surroundings were simple and quiet. The focus was on togetherness, rest, and sharing moments at home rather than going out.

What do we think?

Although the settings were very different—one festive and organised in a busy city, the other quiet and family-centred—both celebrations brought her great happiness. This shows that Christmas joy does not depend on where you are, but on the love and peace you feel with the people around you. ๐ŸŽ„✨

This comparison shows that while Christmas traditions vary across cultures, the heart of the celebration stays the same. Whether in the UK or Angola, Christmas is about family, sharing food, and being together. Different places bring different flavors—but the joy is universal ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŒ
