Africa Climate summit enters day two
In Summary Different leaders are expected to hold several discussions on climate financing and how to scale it up. The United Nations secretary general, António Guterres is also expected to hold a brief at the forum today.Kenya is currently hosting several heads of state and over 15,000 delegates for the first-ever Africa Climate Summit. The forum entered day two, with several stakeholders showcasing at different booths at the Kenya International Conference Center.
Different Kenyan parastatals including the Magical Kenya are showcasing at the forum. Several leaders are expected to hold discussions on climate financing and how to scale it up to the international level for Africa, investing in nature and biodiversity.
From 9 am, President William Ruto will hold a presidential opening, with a discussion on the Global Climate Agenda.
Comoros President Azali Assoumani, UN secretary general António Guterres, African Union Chairperson Moussa Faki, Youth Representative and Indigenous People representative will be present at the launch.
The session is expected to provide an update on the progress of new financial architecture and reform proposals from Africa related to climate finance.
According to the program, the meeting is expected to highlight the link between global financial inequities and insufficient finance for development and climate needs, highlighting the urgency of scaling climate finance.
“The panel will present the African common position on global financial architecture reform, focusing on high-impact reforms of existing structures and instruments, and propose priority requests and commitments to be included in the Nairobi Declaration, aiming to inform key international meetings on Africa's stance on climate financing,” the program stated.
At around 2 pm, another session on unlocking the potential of a Regenerative Blue Economy in Africa and beyond will be held.
This session seeks to showcase and promote Africa's commitment to developing a regenerative blue economy and advancing the Great Blue Wall initiative, highlighting the establishment of the African High-Level Panel for a Regenerative Blue Economy and its role in providing strategic direction and policy guidance for sustainable blue economic growth.
It will also emphasize the importance of fostering partnerships and collaborations with international organizations and the private sector to drive investments and innovation in coastal and ocean biodiversity conservation for a nature-positive blue economy in Africa.
The opening session will be held by Comoros President Azali Assoumani.

How much does Africa contribute to global carbon emissions?
Africa contributes just 4 percent of global carbon emissions despite being the continent that will suffer the most from climate change.
Tight security has been experienced with the Nairobi CBD, and at the KICC premises, as jets fly over and above the forum venue.
Noticeably, youth were still queuing up at the Charter Hall, the accreditation center, for them to get an opportunity to attend the forum.
President William Ruto had on Monday officially inaugurated the summit, themed: ‘Driving green growth and climate finance solutions for Africa and the world.’
Ruto will also hold a presidential opening, with a discussion on Global Climate Agenda.
